Discipline: Media Studies

Professor: Dr. Marsha Altone

Description:

This course explores the evolution of controversial topics on television, as seen through the lens of women-led shows. Focusing on the groundbreaking series Golden Girls, which premiered in 1985, students will examine how the show tackled sensitive subjects such as dignity in death and sex positivity with a progressive, ahead-of-its-time perspective.

Through analyzing the cultural and historical context of Golden Girls, as well as other women-led shows, students will gain a deeper understanding of the impact these programs have had on shaping attitudes toward controversial topics over the past four decades.
